About Me
A quick Q&A
A Q&A I did for a magazine last year.
What did you want to be when you were a child?
An artist or a writer. But I liked the idea of having adventures too so being a journalist in my twenties really suited me. I worked on glossy magazines interviewing celebrities and reporting on everything from fashion to festivals. And, yes, it was as much fun as it sounds!
Do you ever get writer’s block?
Touch wood, no. I’ve always had loads of ideas. But I do have days when the book I’m working on just isn’t flying and I want to tear it up in frustration and start again. I try and work through those patches. With a bit of sweat it usually comes together in the end.
What’s your guiltiest pleasure?
Listening to cranked-up Dolly Parton, drinking red wine and eating very good, dark chocolate with my girlfriends. Heaven! Rather partial to a bit of online shopping too.
Who is your favourite literary heroine?
Anne Frank inspired me to write as a child. She had such an amazing, wise voice despite her youth. In fiction, it’s always been razor-sharp Elizabeth Bennett from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.
What is your motto?
You’re a long time dead. Cheesy but true.
What motivates you to keep writing?
There’s really nothing else I’d rather do. I’m not sure there’s anything else I can do now either as I’ve been thoroughly spoilt. I fear I am unemployable. I’d be gutted if I couldn’t write fiction.
Describe your perfect weekend?
A view of the sea. Sunshine. My children sleeping late in the morning. The Sunday papers. A happy husband. Steaming coffee. Almond croissants.
Guilty TV pleasure?
Anything to do with property and the wonderful Kirstie Allsopp. I could watch her forever – she’s such a girl’s girl - and I never get bored nosing round other people’s houses.
What are you listening to?
The List by Rosanne Cash, Johnny Cash’s daughter, an album of country and western covers. It’s beautiful and melancholy and sounds very modern.
Beauty tip?
Sleep. It takes off years. Pilates helps too, as it gives you a good posture, which make you look youthful. And love, of course, with a bit of good nookie thrown in. Loved-up people always look beautiful.
What keeps you awake at night?
Buzz Lightyear pressed to my ear by my four year old son, and the immortal words, ‘To infinity and beyond!’
